For Commandant Verhoeven life is beautiful: he is happily married, expecting his first child with the lovely Irène.
But his blissful existence is punctured by a murder of unprecedented savagery. Worse still, the press seem to have it in for him – his every move is headline news. When he discovers that the killer has killed before – that each murder is a homage to a classic crime novel – the fourth estate are quick to coin a nickname… The Novelist…
With both men in the public eye, the case develops into a personal duel, each hell-bent on outsmarting the other. There can only be one winner – whoever has the least to lose.
I enjoyed this immensely, this is the first in a series of a trilogy (the first two have been translated to English so far) by the French author Pierre LaMaitre, the other book in the series is Alex, this was translated from the French before Irene, (a little odd, I know) and I read Alex first, but if I had know, before I would have read them in order an this is preferable as I knew stuff I didn´t want to know, but it didn´t take away any enjoyment, although for some it might.
We are introduced to Commandant Verhoeven (he is also in Alex) who is at a moment in his life where things are perfect for him for the time being. The Commandants character is great, just so different from your usual policeman, (at least I thought so)
This is a well written book, with lush descriptions, (careful here as some of them could be a little gruesome for some), plenty of twist and turns to keep you reading into the night.
